Layer 1: Official certification data
Our base layer is the list of paddles approved for sanctioned play by USA Pickleball. It tells us which paddles are legal, when they were approved, and whether any have been decertified. Every paddle in our database carries its current certification status, and we update it as the official list changes.
Layer 2: Manufacturer specs, verified across sources
Manufacturers publish specs such as weight, core thickness and dimensions. We record them, then cross-check against other sources: retailer listings, packaging, and our own measurements where we have the paddle in hand. When sources disagree we say so, show the range, and note which value we trust and why.
Layer 3: Hands-on testing (rolling out)
We are building a hands-on testing program in which experienced players use paddles in drills and real games and record how they feel. This program is new and rolling out gradually. Until a paddle has been played by our testers, its page will say so clearly, and we won't publish feel ratings for it.
What we measure
- Weight: static weight in ounces, measured on a calibrated scale where we have the paddle.
- Swing weight: how heavy the paddle feels in motion. Higher numbers mean more power and stability but slower hands.
- Twist weight: resistance to twisting on off-center hits. Higher numbers mean a more forgiving sweet spot.
- Core thickness and material: thicker cores (around 16 mm) generally add control and soften feel; thinner cores (around 13–14 mm) tend to add pop.
- Surface: face material (for example raw carbon, fiberglass or hybrid) and texture, which affect spin and feel.
- Shape: length and width. Elongated paddles add reach and power; wider shapes enlarge the sweet spot.
- Handle length: important for two-handed backhands and grip comfort.
- Power, control and spin feel: tester ratings from hands-on play, published only once a paddle has been tested.
